Alyssa and Sarah - UltuCup Gets Chatty: First Period Stories

The UltuCup team thought it would be fun to share some of our mother daughter period stories for Mother’s Day.

I remember my first period vividly. I was in seventh grade, in the back row of my English class thinking…why does my stomach hurt? (whoop whoop first cramp!) So, I went to the bathroom and there it was, a little blood stain right in the center of my tighty whities. What did I do? I rolled up some toilet paper, stuck it in my crotch and back to class I went. No muss, no fuss, it really wasn’t a big deal to me, but I do remember that when I got home that day I went right for the phone and called my mom. I had to tell her, “guess what! I got my period today!”

I always remember going to my mom for help when it came to period products. Looking back, I would have loved one of those first period kits. Those fun period starter kits that come with all the period goodies like pads, tampons…and chocolate. It’s such a fun idea to have something that celebrates and better informs you about your period.

If I have a daughter one day…I would get her one of those kits and it would have a menstrual cup in it!

Being honest… I do not remember my first period. I think I was so embarrassed that I pushed the memory deep into the cobwebs of my brain. It’s a fuzzy memory. I was scared to tell my mom and I don’t even know why! Fast-forward eleven years later and here I am working to educate people about sustainable menstrual care options- haha!

Periods happen. Every woman has experienced this, so why was I so embarrassed? Periods were a hush-hush topic when I was growing up. Who remembers sticking a tampon up their sleeve in the middle of class before going to the bathroom? – YUP!

My advice to anyone reading this… tell your mom! The only memory I have on that first day of womanhood was whispering the words “I got my period” to my mom and her hugging me. Yes, I was super embarrassed… but she was just happy for me!
